I love the month of October, I love seeing the leaves on the trees change, pumpkin spiced lattes, "Strictly Come Dancing" is on the TV and it is of course Halloween, which for me is a chance to decorate my house (not that I really need an excuse) In this blog I have advice on how to plan a Halloween wedding.
Halloween themed weddings are becoming increasingly popular. For some couples they decide to go with a subtle autumnal feel, carved pumpkins, candles, burnt orange colours and others go for a full on halloween theme.
Here's some of my tips for planning the perfect halloween themed wedding.
The Theme
First of all decide on exactly what you are trying to achieve. Do you want a full on horror fest? Is it more autumnal with pumpkins and leaves, or maybe you aiming for Victorian gothic?
Once you've decided that, then it will make it easier to get everything else to fall into place.
Invitations
To set the theme of your wedding, this should really begin with your save the date cards / invitations. This will make your guests fully aware of what to expect on your big day.
You can design your invitations so they represent your favourite spooky characters or location. You could even design them so they look like a mysterious old letter. If it's more of a Victorian gothic feeling, then experiment with appropriate forms of calligraphy.
Location
If you want to embrace the full on spooky theme, then you are spoilt for choice venue wise. The UK has an incredibly amount of venues that would suit.
You could choose a haunted pub, an old castle, a re-purposed prison, or a historical location,
You could look at a place that has spooky significance, such as Whitby.
Other locations you could consider are National Justice Museum, Nottingham. Pendennis castle, Cornwall. The Tower of London. Oxford Prison Hotel, or Bodmin Jail Hotel.
Outfits
The theme you have chosen will influence the outfits you choose to wear.
If you don't want it to be tacky, then avoid anything that you might buy for a Halloween party, they might have their place in the Photo Booth or as part of your decorations, but possibly not for your outfit. (of course, if that's what you want to do, then go for it!)
Colour-wise, it might be you opt for a deep red, purple, or black made in a rich velvet. Lace can also add a gothic texture.
You can also use accessories such as skull cufflinks or hair slides.
If it's more of an autumnal Halloween wedding, then go for burnt oranges, browns, greens, creams, colours to give you a sense of warmth.
Decorations.
Again, depending on your exact theme will determine your decorations, for full on horror, you could re-create scenes from your favourite films, or play homage to your favourite scary characters.
You could hang fake cobwebs, skulls, coffins, bats, skeletons - full on Halloween. There are companies that hire out props from horror films. Companies such as Keely Hire or Event Prop Hire.
You could be more subtle and opt for pumpkins, candles and autumnal colours for your chair coverings and table decorations.
Flowers
For your bouquet, corsages and boutonnieres, then you can go for flowers in blacks, reds and purples. You could even add in some extras Halloween-elements, spiders, skulls, bats etc.
For an autumnal wedding, then deep oranges, leaves and pine cones.
Food
Your wedding breakfast is the perfect way of showing your creativity. Even the simplest of cakes can be given a Halloween theme by using dripped red icing on a cake that has been covered in black icing. Cake toppers can also be used to add an extra flare.
Pintrest has some fantastic ideas for Halloween-themed food.
