Crafting the Perfect Maid of Honour Speech: Tips and Tricks

katietrinder

Maid of Honour speeches are becoming increasingly popular, so if you've been asked to to do a speech to celebrate your best friend, then here's my tips as to how to go about crafting the perfect maid of honour speech, tips and tricks.

Writing a Maid of Honour speech is all about celebrating the bride, sharing heartfelt memories, and adding a touch of humor. Here’s a step-by-step guide to crafting a memorable speech:

1. Start with a Strong Opening

  • Introduce yourself and your relationship with the bride.

  • Open with a heartfelt or funny anecdote.

  • Example: "For those of you who don’t know me, I’m [Your Name], and I’ve had the honor of knowing [Bride’s Name] for [X] years. I’ve seen her at her best, and I’ve seen her at 3 AM after a girls’ night—so trust me, she’s truly a catch!"

2. Compliment the Bride

  • Share what makes her an amazing person and friend.

  • Mention her best qualities (kindness, humor, loyalty, etc.).

  • Example: "She’s the kind of friend who always picks up the phone, whether it’s for deep life advice or to discuss which outfit to wear for a coffee run."

3. Talk About the Couple’s Love Story

  • Mention how she met the groom/partner.

  • Share a sweet or funny story about them together.

  • Example: "When she first told me about [Partner’s Name], I knew something was different. Suddenly, her ‘Netflix and chill’ nights weren’t just about rom-coms with me!"

4. Add Some Humor (Optional)

  • A lighthearted joke can make the speech engaging, but be careful of trying to be too funny or saying something that people will find offensive!

  • Example: "Marriage is like having a sleepover with your best friend every night… except now you argue about thermostat settings!"

5. End with a Heartfelt Toast

  • Offer well wishes for their future.

  • Raise a toast with a final meaningful line.

  • Example: "To [Bride’s Name] and [Partner’s Name]—may your love be as endless as [Bride’s] online shopping cart and as strong as [Partner’s] patience when waiting for her to get ready. Cheers!"

Extra Tips:

Keep it short (3-5 minutes).

Practice out loud for flow and confidence.

Avoid inside jokes that most guests won’t understand.

Speak from the heart—sincerity always wins.
